I am delighted we are all here together this afternoon at this “Anthems of World” Concert here at this great institution of higher learning, to celebrate the 78th Anniversary of the entry into force of the Charter in 1945.
The curation of this concert, by The Makorale - a Makerere University community choir – featuring national anthems of selected countries of the world, shows how Makerere continues to be a thought leader in many spheres.
Music is a universal language that bridges divides, reflecting the diversity and unique contributions of cultures around the world. And national anthems are compact summaries of a country’s heritage, values, history, struggles and aspirations, creatively presented through poems and song. So, it is entirely fitting that we are commemorating UN Day here in Kampala with this wonderful musical performance.
Through this concert, we hope to present an opportunity for us all different peoples of the world – and most especially the students and audiences not in this room - to experience a tiny bit of each other’s cherished heritage and values as nations.
And while we enjoy this moment of music, culture and creativity, let us reaffirm our shared commitment to a cause that is becoming more urgent by the day: sustainable development that delivers development progress and Leaves No One behind.
The unprecedented development challenges of today transcends borders and affects us all. Pandemics, climate change, global economic challenges, conflicts with global impact.
The most vulnerable communities are bearing the brunt of our challenged development progress and changing weather patterns.
This afternoon, let the music remind us of our shared humanity and interconnectedness.
And beyond, let us all carry the spirit of this afternoon outside these walls.
And together, let us redouble and accelerate our efforts towards a safer, more peaceful, greener and more sustainable world.
Again, I extend my deepest gratitude to Government of Uganda here represented by the Honourabe Minister, the Makerere University and its staff, to the talented Makorale, to you Ambassadors, High Commissioners, heads of missions, all partners and all students together with us today.
Thank you, and happy happy commemoration of UN Day!
